Not enough Wi-Fi when waiting to fly high

A study conducted by Skyscanner has shown that less than half of Europe’s biggest airports offer free Wi-Fi on an unlimited basis.

Skyscanner’s Airport Wi-Fi guide highlights the amount of time key airports provide free Wi-Fi access for travellers and the associated costs thereafter.

  • Nearly 70% of key Asian airports offer free, unlimited access to Wi-Fi
  • Almost 60% of major Australian airports offer free, unlimited access to Wi-Fi
  • Only 48% of European airports in the study offer unlimited Wi-Fi access

According to Skyscanner’s data, Australian travellers’ most searched destinations in Europe are London, Paris, Rome, Athens and Barcelona.  Travellers will be glad to know that Paris’ main airports and Rome Fiumicino provide free unlimited access to Wi-Fi, but will be disappointed to hear that Barcelona El-Prat only provides 15 minutes of free Wi-Fi access.

Skyscanner’s marketing manager for Australia and New Zealand Dave Boyte, said, “Airport Wi-Fi is becoming very important for both business and leisure travellers. It can be very frustrating for passengers who want to use the internet in transit to find they will be charged for Wi-Fi use. This is useful guide for travellers, but it will also encourage airports to offer a more generous Wi-Fi allowance.”
