Midweek Interview with Ben Roseveare, GM Marketing at Intrepid Group

The challenge for the industry is…. To genuinely put customers at the centre of what we are doing. I see an industry that is sales and discount driven. I am pretty convinced this isn’t really what customers want?

The things I like about my job are… Variety and creativity. No two days are the same and they are very rarely predictable.

And the frustrations… Mediocrity. Life is too short. Burn brightly and brilliantly!

If I didn’t work in travel I would be a… Grade 5 class teacher. Pretty sure that was me in a previous incarnation.

Qantas or Virgin? Qantas. A380 via Dubai to London. Brilliant. Transformed the experience.

My proudest moment was… And still is… watching any of my children achieve something new and wonderful. Many adults lose this joy along the journey somewhere.

The naughtiest thing I ever did was… Forgot my 4th wedding anniversary. Nightmare. Haven’t forgotten again.

I try to relax by… Long distance running. Works well for me.

The last time I feared for my life… Bus ride. Picos Mountains, Spain. 2012. Driver who though he was Fernando Alonso. Not funny. Not impressed!

If I can, I always try to avoid… Crowds and mirrored elevators. In that order. Becomes very acute when the two are combined.

I really wish I had… Set up my own travel business when I was younger. Suddenly you’re on the career ladder, you’ve become a senior exec, you’ve turned 40 … J

The best advice I’ve ever received was… Slow down and listen more. Not everyone is able to (or indeed wants to) move along at your pace.

I don’t understand why… The world is still such an unequal place. We’re still so privileged – I dreamed I might make a real difference 20 years ago.

My greatest weakness is… Wine and cheese. Often after a long run – so don’t feel quite so guilty!

And my greatest strength… People power… team ethic, work ethic and putting customers at the center of it all.

If I was prime minister I would… Keep the red flag flying high!

If I won $1 million on the lottery I would… No longer have a mortgage. Which would be an amazing feeling!

If I could be someone else for one day I would be… My eldest son – aged 10. I would love to know how he really sees today’s world.

I’ve always wanted to travel to… The world’s remote and wild mountains. Fortunate enough to be living the dream.

My favourite holiday was… Majorca with the tribe. Been a few times … companionship, camaraderie and comic family moments. (and Antarctica with my Dad – see photo!)
