New tourism industry members inducted to the Sydney Airport Community Forum are set to renew arguments for easing flight restrictions at the city’s main airport in Mascot.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the chairman of the forum, John Alexander, told members that new business representatives from Qantas, the Tourism & Transport Forum and the Sydney Business Chamber will join the group which was set up in 1996 to monitor noise impact at the site.

The paper reports the number of Federal MPs currently on the forum will also be cut from 13 to four.

New members are said to campaign for a “relaxation in Sydney’s flight rules,” which was initially designed to reduce aircraft noise, the paper reports.

Currently, Sydney Airport only allows 80 flight movements per hour or 20 movements every 15 minutes, which the new members are said to have put on the agenda to increase.

"Our first priority is the 15 minute cap which restricts the number of airline movements per 15 minutes, making it difficult for the airport to make adjustments such as due to fog or high winds," Sydney Business Chamber executive director Patricia Forsythe told the paper.

According to the report, the Abbott government is firmly against increasing the hourly cap or removing the 11pm to 6am curfew at the airport, despite renewed calls from the NSW government in May.
