Canberra has long been tarred with a serious image, with the city associated with the tedium of school trips.

But the city is undergoing a renaissance, with a range of new attractions, and food-inspired activities that are inspiring travellers to give it another look.

Foodie delights

The sixth annual Truffle Festival, Canberra & Capital Region 2014 is on now until mid-August with over 45 participating venues offering the opportunity to taste and experience this revered fungus. Accor is the official accommodation partner for the event with a Gastronomy Package available and Masterchef Masterclasses being hosted at each of its three properties in the area.

Arts & culture fix

Culture vultures will find no shortage of inspiration at the National Gallery of Australia – the home of the iconic Blue Poles splatter painting by Jackson Pollock. Next weekend is the last weekend to catch special exhibitions ‘Bali: Island of the Gods’ and ‘Atua: Sacred Gods from Polynesia’.

A look into history

History buffs should pay a visit to the National Museum of Australia (NMA) – a fascinating exploration of Australian identity through the ages with a strong emphasis on Indigenous culture. Or head over to the Royal Australian Mint to glimpse into Australia’s own story told through rare coins from the national collection.

Family getaway

There are plenty of attractions which will appeal to all ages making them great family options. Cockington Green Gardens is known for its meticulously crafted miniature buildings of an original English village as well as over 40 scale models from countries around the world. Or Questacon makes science fun with its interactive displays including a six-metre slide, earthquake experience as well as the ‘Spectacular Science Show’.

Sporting antics

Those with a love of watching or playing sports can take a fascinating look at the training regimes of elite athletes at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). The athlete-guided tour which uncovers where Australia’s sporting champions are created, and offers a look back at some of Australia’s greatest sporting moments.
