Aussie grasp on Kiwi market slips

Australia remains the number one holiday destination for New Zealand, but the number of Kiwis seeking to holiday this side of the ditch is at its lowest point since 2007, a new survey has shown.

According to new Roy Morgan research, more than 40% of New Zealanders are keen to pay us a visit – double the number of those wanting to visit the US which came second.

England came in third place, with a number of European and island destinations filling out the rest of the top ten. Fiji came sixth, Hawaii seventh and Cook Islands eighth.

Roy Morgan general manager NZ, Pip Elliott, said Australia's proximity and "relatively low costs" are behind its popularity, but highlighted growing interest in other destinations.

"Nearby island holidays in Cook Islands, Hawaii and Fiji seem to satisfy a lot of different holiday attitudes," she said. "People who say they prefer to be very active or do nothing are each more likely than average to visit these destinations."

For our Trans-Tasman neighbours, half of the fun of travel is in the planning with almost 60% of them booking and arranging their trips themselves and only around one in four seeking holidays where everything is organised on their behalf.
