Busy US airport forced to close due to flooding and intense rainfall

A busy airport in the United States has been forced to close due to extensive flooding in its terminals and on the tarmac.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport confirmed all flights were grounded, and advised travellers to stay away.

Nearby areas had been evacuated with residents told to go to higher ground as intense rainfall moved through the area.

A video posted on Twitter claiming to be taken from a road near the airport shows torrents of water falling onto the road from metres above.

A person can be seen holding a baby on the road.

Unofficial rainfall measurements have recorded around 25cm of rain so far.

The weather authority has issued multiple tornado, flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings across the South Florida region.
