Hotel Review: La Sultana is an oasis among the chaos of Marrakech
A peaceful hideaway right in the centre of the Medina’s hustle and bustle, La Sultana is an oasis among the chaos of Marrakech – a chaos we absolutely loved.
From the entrepreneurial sale pitches to the pungent and exotic smells of tagines, Marrakech is the perfect shamble Arabic, European and African culture and La Sultana’s location in the heart of Kasbah makes it the perfect base to explore this ancient city.
With captivating architecture, intriguing gardens and rooftops overlooking the city, the hotel is a Moroccan adventure in itself.
Look and Feel upon arrival
As soon as we walked into the lobby, we were overcome by an immediate sense of peace; it is a sensory immersion of the calming kind.
With bold Brass doors at the entrance and a warm welcome, Le Sultana’s lobby is an experience in its own right.
The building was handed down to a former Palace worker as a gift for his devotion and loyalty to the dynasty. Caid Azzi Boujema’s son restored the building while the city was under French control and it became known for its lavish parties and glamourous high society soirées.
“When you see the brick vaults of one of the riads you learn about how long it takes to make one pillar and vault, it can take twenty days and up to a month” – Xavier Soundrom
Rooms
The Sultana Marrakech has 28 stunning rooms and suites, each is unique and showcases exquisite African artworks.
Each room overlooks one of the hotel’s riads – a traditional Moroccan garden – and boasts stunning and spacious interiors enriched by the city’s iconic architecture.
From stucco ornamentation to hand-carved woodwork and tadelakt (polished plaster) surfaces, La Sultana is a visual feast.
Service
Every guest is given a mobile phone with access to a butler or personal host enabling them to arrange transport, dinner reservations and even make a call if they get lost in the Medina – a quite common occurrence!
Of course, that is all part of the fun; to explore the labyrinth and get lost, so we made it a goal to not call our host for this purpose. All the same, it was an invaluable resource for insider tips on where to go and what to do.
Food
The food, which is sourced from a small group of local producers as well as La Sultan’s own organic garden, is a delicious and modern take on traditional Moroccan fare and modern European cuisine.
We had the most scrumptious breakfasts in the hotel’s restaurant every morning before heading out for the day.
Spa and experiences
The Spa is very lush – there is a gym, outdoor heated swimming pool and other mod cons, but to stay there is to step back in time and be immersed in a bygone era.
There is also a varied and interesting experience list on offer from hot air ballooning, an evening in the desert, to learning authentic Moroccan cuisine with their cooking classes.
Overall Experience
La Sultana was a highlight of our luxury experiences this trip. The ambience was a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the Medina.
