AFTA farewells industry legend

AFTA farewells industry legend

Former AFTA CEO and life member, John Dart OBE RFD ED, passed away on 19 April 2022 at age 90.

Dart was the CEO of AFTA for over 10 years between 1985 to 1995 and was formally made a life member of the Federation in May 1996.

Dart made significant contributions to Australia’s travel sector such as establishing the AFTA Travel Insurance Program and was the driving force behind establishing AFTA Training Colleges.

These investments supported AFTA members and established the financial foundation from which the Federation has operated since.

Globally, Dart drove collaboration with like-minded organisations to coordinate efforts to improve the industry and which commenced in the establishment of the World Travel Agents Association Alliance.

Dart was an active member of the Army Reserves and reached the rank of Brigadier.

“John Dart or more widely known as Mr Dart, was an industry force and ensured Australia’s travel agents had the support they needed and were well represented,” AFTA CEO Dean Long said.

“His legacy at AFTA lives on. The income generated from the AFTA Travel Insurance program still underpins the financial equity strength of the Federation.

“John had an incredible understanding of the issues and solutions needed for the industry. He drove strong alliances specifically with NZ and Canada leading to greater collaboration between these countries.

“The AFTA Board of Directors and CEO sends our condolences to the Dart family and recognition for his leadership to the Sector.”

Dart is survived by four children, nine grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
