American Airlines to cut all Aussie flights

Miami, USA - July 30, 2014: The new and the old visual design of American Airlines together at Miami International Airport, Miami, Florida.

American Airlines will suspend all customer and cargo flights between Australia and the US for two months.

A spokesman for the airline said the suspension will begin on 1 September and last until at least 28 October as a result of the “ongoing travel restrictions surrounding the coronavirus”.

“We’re reaching out to customers scheduled to travel on affected flights to offer alternate arrangements,” the spokesman said.

The airline is only operating one route at the moment, between LA and Sydney.

It was the first airline to cut services after the Australian government cut the inbound travel cap back to 3,000 people per week, due to the increased risk posed by the delta variant of COVID-19.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the cap could be in place until the end of the year.

According to 9News, Singapore Airlines confirmed last week it would have to make some flights cargo only because of the new cap.

There are still more than 30,000 Australians trying to get home from overseas who will now be further delayed by the cap and its resulting service cancellations.
