Thai national park sends trash to litterbugs’ houses

A national park in Thailand is sending trash to people’s houses for the best possible reason.

Khao Yai National Park near Bangkok has begun sending rubbish back to those who leave it behind, according to the country’s environment minister.

Upon visiting the park, tourists and locals alike must register with their address so rangers can track them down.

“The garbage tourists have left behind is in its box and ready to be returned to its owner,” said environment minister Varawut Silpa-archa in a Facebook post.

The Thai minister also warned that littering can attract up to five years imprisonment and 500,000 Baht (more than $20,000) in fines.

“Let’s modify our behaviour to make a new normal. Travel with conscience. Let’s maintain cleanliness and save the environment,” Varawut said.

“Because from not on, we will take legal action.”

According to BBC News, the trash was posted out with a note that said: “You forgot these things at Khao Yai National Park.”

It’s not clear how rangers know who left what rubbish, but we reckon this strategy should be employed everywhere.
