Tripadvisor introduces contactless menu feature for restaurateurs

Following on from its ‘Travel Safe’ suite of tools, Tripadvisor has launched a new solution that gives diners more confidence to safely visit restaurants.

With menus are one of the most-handled items in a restaurant, Tripadvisor has developed a way for restaurateurs to create contactless menus directly from the platform’s management centre.

The feature is free to any restaurant that has added a menu link to its Tripadvisor listing, automatically generating a QR code that restauranteurs can download and post throughout their business. Diners can then scan the code directly to their phone to access the menu.

The code is specific to each business and won’t change, even if they update their menu.

Tripadvisor’s new menu solution comes not long after the company revealed a US$153 million ($213.2 million) loss during the second quarter of 2020 – a significant swing away from the US$34 million ($47. 4 million) profit during the prior corresponding quarter.

While overall revenue for the second quarter of the year was down 86 per cent to US$59 million ($82.2 million), Tripadvisor said it was “modestly better than we anticipated”.

Steve Kaufner, CEO of Tripadvisor, said the quarterly results reflect the “historic impact” the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the company and the broader travel industry.

“Significant year-over-year impacts persist and near-term visibility remains low. That said, we are encouraged that consumer travel demand trends have been gradually improving since the April nadir,” he said.

“Travel’s recovery path will likely be uneven by geography and by sector, as businesses and borders reopen and consumer confidence in their own health and safety is restored.

“Accordingly, we are leveraging our platform’s core strengths to help customers and redoubling strategic efforts to emerge in a strong position on the other side of this pandemic.”
