Rail company calls out Greta Thunberg tweet

A German rail company has criticized Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg for implying she was left without a seat on a crowded train.

Thunberg tweeted a photograph of herself seated on the ground next to a pile of luggage onboard a train with the caption: “Traveling on overcrowded trains through Germany. And I’m finally on my way home!”

The activist travelled from the COP25 UN climate conference in Madrid via a climate protest in Turin, Italy via train and was on her way home for Christmas after a year travelling the world by rail, sea and road, according to the Guardian.

The rail company, Deutsche Bahn initially responded to the tweet apologising to the teenager and saying it was working on improving its trains but that tweet has since been deleted.

On Sunday, Deutsche Bahn tweeted defending its service.

“Dear Greta, thank you for supporting us railroad workers in the fight against climate change!” the rail company tweeted.

“We are pleased that you were one the ICE 74 with us on Saturday… though it would have been nicer if you also reported how friendly and competently you were looked after by our team in your seat in first class.”

Thunberg responded clarifying the details of her trip.

“Our train from Basel was taken out of traffic. So we sat on the floor on 2 different trains,” she said.

“After Göttingen, I got a seat. This is no problem of course and I never said it was. Overcrowded trains is a great sign because it means the demand for train travel is higher!”
