The Indonesian tourist island of Bali has been struck by an underwater earthquake.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported at 10:24am on Tuesday that the south of Bali had been shaken by a magnitude 6.2 earthquake off the coast of the island, but revised it to magnitude 5.8.

The earthquake struck 259 kilometres south-east of Surabaya, which has a population of more than 2.3 million people, at a depth of approximately 100 kilometres.

There have been no immediate reports of casualties from the earthquake. No tsunami warning has been issued, according to BMKG, the Indonesian agency who monitors earthquakes.

The Bali Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said it is working to assess damage caused by the earthquake.

“We are still doing an assessment to collect data of the impact of the earthquake,” Made Rentin, head of BPBD, said.

“We urge people to stay calm and don’t panic.”

Twitter user Hathai Pia, who claims to be staying in Seminyak, Bali, said that her hotel was evacuated.

Nine News Asia correspondent Renae Henry shared video of a primary school near Uluwatu that was damaged during the earthquake. She writes “Bali earthquake also damaged primary school near Uluwatu. Some schools have sent students home for the day.”

Henry also shared images of the entrance to a Nusa Dua hotel that had also been damaged.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in Indonesia, with the region lying on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.
