6,000-year-old Aboriginal site among 29 new UNESCO World Heritage listings 2019
UNESCO has added 29 new World Heritage Sites to its registry for 2019, with Australia’s Budj Bim Cultural Landscape among them.
Following its 43rd annual committee session in Baku, Azerbaijan, UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee has added 29 new cultural and natural sites from around the world to its World Heritage List.
Among them is the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, found within the Country of the Gunditjmara people of southwest Victoria, a region where the people of the region developed one of the largest and oldest aquaculture networks in the world 6,000 years ago, owing to lava flows from the Budj Bim Volcano.
Culture, as a category, holds the majority for sites added to the list, with 24 inscribed for their cultural value and four for their natural value.
The committee also approved the extension of an existing site in Albania, the Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region in North Macedonia, while the Paraty and Ilha Grande site of Brazil was inscribed for its mixed cultural and natural value.
