NSW storm chaos: travellers delayed by bad weather at Sydney airport

Huge storm over the Sydney skyline

Chaos from Thursday’s storm is causing significant delays at Sydney Airport.

Passengers are being told to expect long waits, after widespread flight cancellations due to yesterday’s storms across New South Wales.

At least 40 domestic and international flights were cancelled to and from Sydney on Thursday, which resulted in the Federal Government extending the airport’s curfew past 11pm to ease the backlog.

“Currently in the T2 terminal we have had seven arrivals cancelled and nine departures cancelled,” a spokesperson for Sydney Airport said.

“In the T1 terminal we have had two cancellations and a small number of delays. But passengers should check with their airline for further information.”

Qantas has been forced to cancel more than 20 of its flights in two days, with customers contacted and accommodated for flights on the next available services.

However, passengers re-booking their services through airline providers have been warned of lengthy waits due to the mass of customers looking for alternative flights out of Sydney Airport.

A spokesperson for Jetstar told News.com.au relief flights had been scheduled by the airline.

“We’ve cancelled one morning flight from Sydney to Adelaide and its return due to the weather in Sydney,” the spokesperson said.

“Yesterday a total of seven return flights between Sydney and Melbourne were cancelled due to the storms.

“We’ve added six relief flights this morning to accommodate affected customers today and get them to their destination as quickly as we can.”
