Airline sues passenger for missing flight

A European airline is persisting with legal action against a passenger who intentionally missed his flight as part of a sneaky tactic to save money on plane tickets.

Germany’s Lufthansa is seeking compensation from the passenger, who booked a return trip from Oslo to Seattle, which included a stopover in Frankfurt, only to skip his connecting flight on purpose.

The loophole, known has ‘skiplagging’ or ‘hidden city ticketing’, is commonly exploited by savvy travellers, whereby they book flights with the stopover location as their intended final destination rather than paying for the sometimes more expensive direct flights.

According to a travel website called Skipplagged, the tactic is “perfectly legal and the savings can be significant”. However, it does outline some of the risks associated with hidden city ticketing.

Lufthansa sued the man for violating its terms and conditions, and sought compensation to the tune of 2,112 euros ($3,370).

While court case was originally dismissed in December, a spokesperson for the airline told CNN that Lufthansa had already filed an appeal against the decision.
