Here’s what 8 am looks like around the world

A Belgian photographer travelled to 50 countries across Asia, Africa, South America and the Middle East to document what the world looks like at 8 am.

Pascal Mannaerts met with scores of people around the globe to create portraits and snapshots of how they start their day, stemming from his adoration for mornings while travelling.

“When I started to travel around the world and take pictures, I quickly noticed that I loved to wake up very early to discover a new place. It’s about the amazing morning light, about the feeling to start another day in an unknown place, with an open and totally fresh mind,” Mannaerts told Lonely Planet.

“This feeling is unique and priceless, to watch life starting over again after the night.

“I also feel a strong spontaneity and an even greater closeness to people early in the day, before the daily activities take everyone into their own universe.”

From morning yoga practices in Varanasi, India to the packed trains of the Tokyo morning commute, Mannaerts photos capture the magic of morning rituals.

“I was amazed to see how lifestyles, moods and daily activities can be so different from one place to another. It is the beauty and the diversity of peoples that stands out in this series of photos,” he said.

Here are our favourite photos from the series. Check out the rest here or on Mannaerts Instagram.
