“Instagrammability” overtakes food and culture in millennial travel priorities
New research from Schofields has revealed that more than 40 per cent of under 33-year olds prioritise ‘Instagrammability’ when choosing their next holiday destination.
Which means it now beats other important factors like food, culture and price.
The thought that ANYTHING could rank higher than food comes as a bit of a shock to us, but we’re willing to overlook our fellow traveller’s misgivings.
Seeing as Instagram is now such a huge factor in holiday planning, online language learning app Babbel has shared some of the most underrated, but awe-inspiring, destinations around the world.
So you can make your feed stand out from the hoards of people posting the Eiffel Tower and Sagrada Familia with some truly unique shots of off-the-beaten-track areas.
Plus they’ve included some very handy language tips for your Insta captions.
Lençóis Maranhenses, Brazil
With silky white sand and seasonal rain, a desert oasis look-alike has been created just outside the Amazon Basin in Brazil.
Despite the miles of sand dunes, don’t be fooled as it’s not actually a desert! Lençóis Maranhenses treats the travellers who make the trek there with a view of blue-green lagoons that have been formed among the sand dunes and is out of this world.

“Do you believe this is real?!” in Portuguese: “Você acredita que isso é real?!”
Pronounced “vose – akrijeeta – ke – Isu – ea – haow”
Annecy, France
Found on the edge of Annecy lake is the most beautiful fairytale town.
Surrounded by a stream of canals, the old Annecy town is truly magical and will take you to another world. During spring and summer, there is an abundance of flower boxes lining the canals making it all the more picturesque.

“Taking a break to smell the flowers!” in French: “Petite pause pour sentir les fleurs!”
(lit. “Little break to smell the flowers!”)
Pronounced “peteet – paws – pur – soteer – le – fleur”
Geirangerfjord, Norway
Not only is the Geirangerfjord the most scenic fjord in Norway, but it’s also one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world!
A little insider tip – it’s best viewed as you wind your way up the narrow road that connects this fjord with the rest of the region.
This road is only open during the months of summer so immerse yourself with the full experience while you can!

“Just chilling, no dramas!” in Norwegian: “Full avslapping, null drama!”
(lit. “Full relaxing, zero drama!”)
Pronounced “fuhl – afschlapping – nuhl – drama”
Playa de las Catedrales, Galicia, Spain
If the name wasn’t a giveaway, the Cathedrals Beach is unique due to its archways that line the coastline.
If you’re a beach bum and looking for something a bit out of the ordinary that will be memorable for years to come after your trip – this ticks all the boxes.

“Can you please take a photo of me?” in Spanish: “¿Puedes tomarme una foto, por favor?” Pronounced “pwedes – tomarmay – oona – foto – por – fahbor”
Wroclaw, Poland
Despite Wroclaw being the largest city in western Poland, it’s the least touristy one! The bright architecture encapsulates the city’s youthful and creative vibe.
You’ll find that the city is scattered with gnomes (over 300 and counting) and the history of the gnome settlement goes back to when the city was controlled by the USSR.
The gnomes slowly began appearing as a calling card of the underground Orange Alternative movement as people started to protest against the oppressive conditions with silliness and fun. The gnomes have become a symbol of freedom in Wroclaw ever since.

“And where are those gnomes?” in Polish: “No i gdzie są te krasnale?”
Pronounced “noy – gjeso – tekrasnahleh”
Torno, Lombardy, Italy
Lake Como is surrounded by many hidden gems, and with only a short ferry trip away, Torno is certainly worth the visit.
Engulfed by a lush sea of green and overlooking Lake Como, this commune is great for taking a step back and really enjoying the serenity.
Some may pop by for a day trip (or even just a nice lunch), but others choose to stay for a few days and do some scenic activities – not only will you be having a good cardio workout, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views throughout the entire experience.
