Photos: Russian snowfields turn orange

Skiing in Russia seems like a strange enough phenomenon as it is.

Let alone the snow apparently turning orange.

That’s right, the snowfields at the Winter Olympics hub of Sochi have turned bright orange.

Photos of the snowfields take us right back to when our own city turned orange nearly a decade ago.

That has little to no relevance to this article, other than sharing the same colour, though nine years later we’re still grappling the details of this weird, weird day.

But we digress.

The tangerine tinge of the Russian snowfields is apparently due to a massive sandstorm which ripped through the Sahara Desert before it headed past the Mediterranean and through to its final destination of Sochi.

A spokesperson from UK’s Met Office (the British BOM) Steven Keates said: “Looking at satellite imagery from NASA, it shows a lot of sand and dust in the atmosphere drifting across the Mediterranean.

“When it rains or snows, it drags down whatever is up there, if there is sand in the atmosphere.”
