How to ensure you’re not travel’s next hacking victim

Computer hacker stealing information with laptop

After yesterday’s story of a travel agent pleading guilty to hacking into her rival agency’s Tramada systems – and scoring unfair advantages as a result – Tramada thought it was a good time to give agents some handy security tips.

Tramada, as one of the big tech provider in the travel industry, felt agents and other industry colleagues would benefit from a timely reminder of system security best practices.

Speaking to Travel Weekly, Country Manager ANZ, Susan Enners, said, “In light of recent articles and warnings on system hacking, it is a timely reminder for all to safeguard the security of any system used.”

Here are the top security recommendations she shared with us:

  1. Do not share your password with anyone – incorporate this into your employee contracts
  2. Use a complex password – Tramada mandates this
  3. Be a PCI compliant business – Tramada provides a PCI-compliant environment
  4. Use different passwords for different systems
  5. Change your password every 90 days – Tramada mandates this
  6. Clear browser cache daily
  7. Ensure staff log out of the system at the end of their day
  8. Periodically review staff log in time stamps to identify anomalies
  9. Take advantage of Tramada’s FOC 2-Factor-Authorisation to prevent logins from unauthorised IP addresses
  10. Alternatively, use IP lock-down – which is tying down user logins to a specific computer (IP address)
  11. Terminate user logins when staff leave your business

“With the advancements in technology, system security has never been stronger, but it is still reliant on human behaviours being in line with security protocols,” Enners added.

“So don’t fall behind, review your security practices today!”
