Qantas CEO’s pie-attacker charged

The man who smushed a lemon meringue pie into Qantas CEO Alan Joyce’s face has been charged, following news Joyce would be suing him.

The man attacked Joyce mid-way through a business breakfast presentation in Perth earlier this week, as a protest against same-sex marriage and company CEOs who support it.

The 67-year-old man, Tony Overheu, told 6PR, “From my reading, it would appear that Alan Joyce is very much part of a network trying to subvert the federal parliamentary process around the issue of marriage equality.”

Overheu has now been charged with common assault, damage and trespass.

Per The Australian, Western Australian Police said they had laid charges “against a 67-year-old man after an incident in East Perth on Tuesday, 9 May 2017”.

“The man attended a hotel located on Adelaide Terrace at around 8:15am,” police say in the media release. “It is alleged he struck a man who was speaking at a conference in the face with a pie.”

Per media reports, Overheu is a devout Christian, and called Qantas’ corporate support for marriage equality “social engineering”.
