United settles with assaulted passenger

United Airlines has reportedly reached a settlement with passenger Dr David Dao, who was dragged off an overbooked flight and suffered multiple injuries.

According to Fortune, just two weeks after Dao sustained a concussion, broken nose and lost his front teeth, a monetary agreement was made between the parties.

However, as part of the settlement, the actual amount Dao settled for must remain confidential.

One of Dao’s lawyers even commended United for doing the right thing, a welcome change for the airline who were berated for poorly handling the situation and blaming Dao initially for the altercation.

“Dr. Dao has become the unintended champion for the adoption of changes which will certainly help improve the lives of literally millions of travelers,” his lawyer, Thomas A. Demetrio, wrote in a statement, per Fortune.

“Mr. Munoz said he was going to do the right thing and he has.

In addition, United has taken full responsibility for what happened on Flight 3411, without attempting to blame others, including the City of Chicago. For this acceptance of corporate accountability, United is to be applauded.

Video of Chicago law enforcement officers at O’Hare Airport pulling Dao down the aisle with a bloodied face went viral across the internet, sparking outrage against the airline.

United has since changed its policies on using police force to remove passengers from overbooked flights, and even overhauled its overbooking policies as well.

“We breached public trust, and it’s a serious breach,” United CEO Oscar Munoz told NBC News last week.
