IHG signs new-build Sydney property
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and Linzhu (Australia) Pty Ltd have signed an agreement to open the Holiday Inn Sydney Central just a stone’s throw from Central Station, Capitol Theatre and Chinatown.
Adding 305 rooms in Sydney by 2020, the flagship hotel is the largest midscale property in the Sydney CBD pipeline and will feature a design-led restaurant, terrace bar and 120 seat meeting space.
The hotel will be part of a mixed use development that will include a 1,000 square metre private art gallery and a retail concourse.
Holiday Inn Sydney Central will be located in the highly anticipated 430 Pitt Street development, towering up seventeen storeys, and accompanied by a sloping roof and “green waterfalls”, or living garden.
Convenience and guest experience will be key, with easy access to George Street light rail, Central Station and Sydney’s new Convention Centre.
Jing Wen Lin, Director at Linzhu commented, “The property will be a jewel in the Sydney CBD landscape with its unique wedge-shaped design and green flowing rooftops. Sydney continues to experience significant demand so it’s a great time to be opening a new hotel, and I can’t imagine a better partner than IHG nor a better brand than Holiday Inn to make the most of this rare space.”
Speaking to Travel Weekly, Karin Sheppard, Chief Operating Officer at IHG added, “Holiday Inn is a great brand for business and leisure, with a market for both in that location.
“The outlook for Sydney continues to be very strong in terms of domestic and international visitation. It will be built in a very contemporary version of the brand.
“We’re in a strong position in this market to capitalise on this global force of the brand in order to attract high quality guests.
“The Holiday Inn brand is all about delivering the joy of travel, and we’re certain this will be the case in this hotel. Visitors can expect the familiarity of the Holiday Inn brand in a contemporary setting.
“This is a great opportunity to complement growth in the luxury end of the market with the largest mid-scale hotel in Sydney.
“There’s a meeting space in the hotel for small to medium-sized corporate events, and I think we’ll be absorbing the demand that comes from the Convention Centre.”
Sheppard added, “A number of Holiday Inn properties are going through their own renovations, so we have hotels already coming through with the contemporary version of the brand.
“We’re setting the tone for the future of the brand already in Perth and Flinders Lane in Melbourne. IHG is progressively updating the existing hotels’ design to become current.
“Holiday Inn Darling Harbour has also done lot to make the rooms and public areas more contemporary, and our owners are happy to invest in updating hotels.”
“The Holiday Inn brand has been a story of success for IHG in Australia, so we are excited to be building on our portfolio that already includes six Holiday Inn hotels in Sydney.”
The first Holiday Inn globally opened its doors in 1952 and today the Holiday Inn Brand Family is the largest hotel brand in the world, with the largest development pipeline. The first property in Australasia was the Holiday Inn City Centre Perth, which opened on 2 March 1998.
IHG currently has 26 hotels operating under four brands in Australia: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express.
