Your dollars will go further in South East Asia

Pack you bags Australia, South East Asia has yet again, made it in the top 100 list of the most affordable hotspots for accommodation.

The latest Hotel Price Index™ (HPI™) from Hotels.com has revealed that Southeast Asia has yet again captured Australian travellers’ hearts, with 65 destinations from across the region in the top 100 list of the most affordable hotspots that recorded the lowest prices paid* for a hotel room in the first half of 2016. Forty eight destinations averaged less than $100 per hotel room per night.

The latest Hotels.com HPI, a regular report on hotel prices in major destinations across the world, tracking the movement in prices that people actually paid for their accommodation, uncovered the top ten bang-for-your-buck cities were located in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Kuala Lumpur trumps all destinations in the value-for-money stakes

The cultural melting pot of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was the international destination where Aussies paid the least for a hotel room in the first half of 2016, up 18% on the previous year at $43 per night. Solo, Indonesia came in second place ($46) on the most affordable list, followed by both Udon Thani, Thailand and Hue, Vietnam ($63) and Semarang, Indonesia ($64).

Buleleng, Bali saw the steepest decline overall in the cost of a bed where the average price paid fell a staggering 62% year-on-year from $180 per night to $69 per night.

Commenting on the latest HPI data, “Year after year, Southeast Asia dominates the best-value list and it’s no wonder due to its proximity for Australian travellers and the fact that money stretches that much further,” regional director, Australia and New Zealand for the Hotels.com brand, Katherine Cole said.

Australian travellers were less fortunate in Bora Bora, French Polynesia which came out on top as the international destination where Australian travellers paid an arm and a leg for a hotel room. The cost of a hotel room at this tropical island destination set Aussies back an average of $1,123 per night, and this is despite the steep decline of 18% year-on-year that the island paradise saw compared to the first six months of 2015, where the cost of a room then was $1,373 per night.

Bora-Bora Luxury Dream Holiday

The Hawaiian city of Kapolei was the second-least affordable destination for Aussies, where the average price paid for a hotel room increased by 11% to $705 per night. This was followed by Wailea in Hawaii ($626) and Ungasan in Bali which saw the steepest increase in the price overall, rising 211% to a whopping $604 per night.

The HPI data is drawn from bookings made on the hundreds of thousands of hotels on the Hotels.com websites worldwide.
