Thailand floods kill 14, tourists cautioned

The death-toll stands at 14 from this week’s floods in Thailand, hitting the country’s southern region ahead of the popular tourism season.

Heavy rains have been reported to parts of the south including the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangnan and Koh Tao.

Smart Traveller have added an update saying “we continue to advise Australians to exercise a high degree of caution in Thailand.”

“In early December 2016, a number of provinces in the south of Thailand, including popular tourist areas Koh Samui, Koh Phangnan and Koh Tao, were affected by localised flooding. This has resulted in intermittent disruptions to some services such as electricity, water and phone lines.”

“The airport on Koh Samui remains open however travellers may experience some flight delays. Ferry and small tourist boat services continue to operate between Koh Samui and the mainland however tourists are strongly advised to travel by ferry during the inclement weather. Expect congestion on the roads and check with travel agents before departing for affected areas.”
