Throw those trunks up in the air … it’s World Elephant Day

Today is World Elephant Day, an annual event dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world’s largest land animal.

A great initiative to recognise the importance of protecting these giants is The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) in Kenya. Home to the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation programme in the world, this pioneering conservation organisation is proud to have saved over 150 orphaned baby elephants.

nestled within Nairobi National Park, the DSWT’s elephant nursery is overseen by Dr Dame Daphne Sheldrick, whose elephant experience spans a lifetime. It took Daphne nearly three decades of trial and error to perfect the milk formula and complex husbandry necessary to rear an orphaned infant African elephant.

DSWT recently reported they saw ex-orphan, Wendi, now living in the wild with her new-born baby.

To get involved and help care for more orphaned African elephants like Wendi and foster your own with DSWT’s Baby Elephant Foster Parent Programme.

To meet the orphaned elephants in Kenya visit www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org or for more information on seeing these majestic animals in the Kenyan wild visit www.magicalkenya.com.

Watch Wendi’s little one take its first (wobbly) steps.
