More Aussies visiting Hong Kong
The number of Australian tourist arrivals in Hong Kong has spiked, up 2.1 percent for the year to June 2016, to a total of 289,053 visitors this year.
Access has helped boost numbers, with a boost in airline capacity to Hong Kong and a 37 percent increase in cruise passengers to the city.
Hong Kong Tourism Board Regional Director, Andrew Clark said, “We’ve seen a 9 percent hike in vacation arrivals this year to April. You can’t deny that cruise is having an impact on this but also Hong Kong is not just a stopover city anymore and we’re delighted by this.”
Clark adds that the city has become a destination in its own right with the average length of stay for an Australian visitor currently sitting at four nights.
“We’re also seeing more and more people looking to extend that to a week.”
On average Hong Kong welcomes approximately 600,000 Australian visitors a year. For the month of March, total arrivals from Australia saw a 9.1 percent increase, followed by an increase of 7.1 percent in April.
“The extra airline capacity has helped considerably as has our tactical marketing partnerships with airline and trade partners helping to drive competitive rates, accessibility and urgency,” Clark added.
In March, Hong Kong Airlines launched a twice-weekly service from the Gold Coast, via Cairns and through July to October, Qantas is running double daily flights from Sydney to Hong Kong.
