Collapse of Perth travel agency leaves travellers stranded
The recent collapse of Northbridge-based travel agents Global Plus Holidays has left many travellers stranded after the company abruptly shut its offices.
WA Today reported that at least five customers have contacted authorities to say they paid more than $15,000 on travel bookings but then discovered the flights had not been paid for by the agency.
Travellers affected say their travel plans have been ruined and they have been left out of pocket have been scrambling to get hold of the Department for Consumer Protection.
It has also been reported that one couple who booked through Global Plus Holidays had been left stranded abroad because the company had not paid the cash for their return flight.
The Department for Consumer Affairs released a statement saying the agency had confirmed it was facing financial difficulty and was seeking advice from insolvency accountants.
Consumer Protection Commissioner David Hillyard advised travellers who booked through Global Plus Holidays to check that travel arrangements had been paid for, saying “We urgently advise customers to contact the airline and accommodation providers direct to ensure they have confirmed bookings that are fully paid before travelling.”
