Strikes hit airports in Germany

Strikes hit airports in Germany

German airline Lufthansa has cancelled 895 flights scheduled for Wednesday 27 April, from six airports in Germany, as government workers call short-term strikes in the run-up to wage discussions later this week.

The airline published on its website “The German Union Verdi has announced a strike on Wednesday 27 April for the airports Frankfurt/Main, Munich, Dusseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, Dortmund and partly also Hannover-Langenhagen for ground handling, check-in and security services, as well as a section of the fire brigades. Flight delays and cancellations may be expected for all airlines operating at these airports.”

Public-sector workers doing ground handling and security checks were expected to walk off the job.

Lufthansa, which is not part of the negotiations, urged passengers to check their flight status on LH.com.

Strikes are taking place on Tuesday at places like kindergartens and swimming pools. Garbage pick-up and street cleaning in Munich were also affected.

The strikes come ahead of Thursday’s negotiations between the ver.di union, which is looking for a six percent pay rise for its 2 million members, and the government.
