Newcastle Airport roof collapses

Newcastle Airport roof collapses

Newcastle Airport is set to reopen after being battered by a heavy storm on Sunday, causing part of its roof to collapse.

The roof of the airport’s check-in area buckled under a deluge of rain at 1pm on Sunday.

There were no reports of injuries, but most flights in and out of the airport were cancelled for the rest of the day.

The airport will be back in action on Monday, but passengers have been warned to expect delays.

Travellers will be checked in manually, and arriving and departing flights will both be facilitated through the unaffected arrivals lounge.

The check-in terminal will undergo repairs.

“Passengers travelling tomorrow are advised to arrive at the airport earlier than usual to allow for the additional time needed for the manual check-in process,” the airport said in a statement on Sunday night.

“Where possible, departing passengers are urged to check in for their flight before arriving at the airport via their airline’s website or app.”

Most services are expected to resume as scheduled, but Jetstar has grounded all flights to and from the airport until midday Monday.

“Our team will be assessing the damage at the airport and we will provide an update (Monday) morning regarding flights scheduled for Monday afternoon,” Jetstar said in a statement.
