Tahiti tackles tourism challenges

The tourism industry in Tahiti could comfortably sustain a 30 to 40% increase in tourism but many agents feel “uncomfortable” selling holidays to the destination, its tourism body has revealed.

“We have the capacity to have more tourists,” Robert Thompson, director of Tahiti Tourisme in Australia, told Travel Weekly.

The tourism body is targeting tourism growth from the Australian market, however one of the main objections to holidaying in the destination is the lack of direct flights, according to Thompson.

But he countered that the flight-time via New Zealand “isn’t that bad”, so it’s not overly hard for Aussies to get to the islands.

The perceived price point can also act as a deterrent.

“The problem is some people can actually afford to spend a holiday in Tahiti, however some travel agents are uncomfortable selling it because it can sometimes end up being ten or twenty thousand dollars,” he said.

“Tahiti is not cheap, but it is affordable.”
