Brazil being touted as sex-tourism destination

Major events such as the 2014 World Cup are said to be putting Brazil on the map for the wrong reasons, a survey has found.

Over 3,000 websites have emerged over the past two years touting Brazil as a sex-tourism destination, with the situation worsening after hosting major events like the 2014 World Cup, a new survey has found.

According to ETN, a tally by private firm Axur published in O Globo newspaper shows the number of sites linking Brazil to porn, prostitution and sex tourism has surpassed the 2,165 that have already been closed down by the tourism ministry in 2011 and 2012.

Axur counted 3350 new sites in several different languages created since 2013 to promote sex-tourism, the paper reports.

One site stated: “Our young women will not be only sex goddesses but also guides, interpreters, dance partners and really personal lovers.”

Rio de Janeiro was the most commonly touted sex-tourism destination, according to Axur, and expects next year’s Olympic Games to further fuel sex tourism in the country.

However, the tourism ministry disagrees saying by hosting international events would “serve to strengthen the network of protection against sexual exploitation.”

Brazil received 5.8 million foreign tourists in 2013 and just over six million in 2014, but there was no official estimate of how many visitors were driven to the South American destination from sex tourism.
