Barangaroo brings in big guns for design

Renzo Piano is jumping in bed with Barangaroo South to take its design to the next level.

In a move lauded by Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF), Piano will play a key role in bringing the exclusive high-rise residential building to life, as announced in the newly launched Revised Concept Plan, or Mod 8 for those in the know.

TTF’s chief exec Margy Osmond said Piano will bring a certain je ne sais quoi to the development.

“Barangaroo is one of the most significant urban renewal projects currently underway in Sydney and Piano’s involvement will add an exciting dimension to the project,” she said.

“Renzo Piano has built some of the most exciting buildings in the world including The Shard in London, the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and of course Aurora Place here in Sydney.”

“With his eye guiding the development, there is no doubt Barangaroo South will become a world class architecturally exciting destination that will provide a new gateway to the Western Harbour precinct.”

Osmond said Mod 8 cements the vision for Barangaroo as a world class precinct of fusion and style.

“With more than half of the 7.68 ha site dedicated to public space, including an accessible waterfront cove, a new neighbourhood park, and a 100% waterfront foreshore walk, the Revised Concept Plan for Barangaroo South is sure to become a ‘must visit’ destination for visitors and locals alike,” she added.

“From a tourism perspective, the site will be anchored by the Crown resort, which will form the heart of the waterfront precinct, and with restaurants, entertainment spaces, public space, and cultural events.

“Developments like this will ensure that we truly capitalise on the investment we are already making in the Western Harbour precinct and provide an important link between the CBD, Darling Harbour and the emerging hi-tech corridor at Pyrmont and Ultimo.

“It will be new developments like these that will help New South Wales reach its Tourism 2020 target of doubling overnight visitor expenditure to $36.6 billion by the end of the decade.”
