Size does matter, hotel chain gets nod for biggest bandwidth
Check into a Marriott Hotel in Australia and you’re likely to find you’re able to download your emails faster, according to the latest Hospitality Trends report.
The Hospitality Trends: Internet Useage and Wi-Fi Deployment report by Broadband Solutions reveals the latest findings after analysing over 600 Australian hotels in 2013 and 2014 with the Marriott coming out on top in terms of bandwidth capacity.
The report also highlights new challenges the hospitality industry faces with the changing demands of guests, including the rising popularity of online gaming, video streaming, social media, app downloads and software updates.
Accordingly, the report shows only having Wi-Fi available in hotel lobbies “are long gone” with consumers now expecting sufficient coverage throughout the property.
“What started off as a majority of hotels having ADSL2+ has now transformed into “must have” high speed bandwidth for every hotel from 2 star to 6 star, reflecting the recent exponential growth in technology. Hotels are therefore in a position where what was once a feature offered typically to business users is now expected from the majority of hotel patrons,” Broadband Solutions, managing director, Sam Bashiry said.
The report found that today’s hotel guest arrives with on average 3 devices, many of which not 3 or 4G enabled and only use data when connected to Wi-Fi, therefore increasing users demands for free access.
“With more guests expecting complimentary Wi-Fi, hotels have had to cater for an increase in usage and simultaneously a decrease in revenue,” the report stated.
