Qantas was the most punctual domestic airline last month as the carrier heralded its performance as the best of any airline in more than a decade.

On time departures hit 92.5% with 92% arriving on schedule, ahead of Virgin Australia on 91% and 89%.

Qantas said punctuality records were broken in Perth and Darwin with the best result in seven years recorded in Brisbane, Adelaide and Townsville.

Figures from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics showed that on time departures and arrivals averaged 89% and 88%, "significantly better" than the long term average of 84% and 82%.

Of the other major domestic carriers, 86% of Jetstar services departed on time with 87% touching down on schdeule. Tigerair achieved 81% and 79% respectively.

Regional Express led the regional airlines with 91% of flights leaving on time, followed by Virgin Australia Regional Airlines at 88% and QantasLink 87%.

The positions were reversed for arrivals with Virgin at 88%, Rex 87% and QantasLink 83%.

The Qantas regional carrier had the highest cancellation rate, with 2.4%, or 223 flights, failing to leave the ground.

Virgin Australia Regional Airlines cancelled 39 flights, or 1.7%, Virgin Australia 112 (1.1%), Qantas 90 (0.9%), Tigerair 12 (0.9%), Regional Express 21 (0.5%) and Jetstar 20 (0.4%).
