China Southern horses around for Chinese New Year

Hot on the hooves of its third Sydney Festival sponsorship, China Southern Airlines announced a new sponsorship as the official airline of this year’s Sydney Chinese New Year Festival.

At the weekend, more than 100,000 people watched street performers, lion dancers and lantern carriers wind their way through the city to Chinatown where a traditional firework display lit up Darling Harbour.

Featured in the procession were three giant horse figures to mark the creative Year of the Horse in Chinese communities around the world.

China Southern general manager Australia/New Zealand Mr Henry He said the airline was delighted to be part of the Sydney festival because it was the largest Lunar New Year celebration outside China and CZ’s home base of Guangzhou in southern China was among the first cities to forge a Sister City relationship with Sydney.

He said the celebrations, which also include lunar feasts and an art exhibition will culminate next weekend in Dragon Boat races at Darling Harbour, with the airline sponsoring a race and entering its own boat.
