Four Points to "spearhead" Darling Harbour revamp
A $160 million transformation of Darling Harbour’s Four Points by Sheraton hotel is expected to form a significant part of the area’s redevelopment, with the addition of a third tower to stretch over the Western Distributor.
The hotel’s Singapore-based owners, M&L Hospitality, today revealed details of the project, led by Cox Richardson Architects, which is scheduled to take place over a two year period commencing in early 2014.
The new tower will add 230 rooms to the property’s recently refurbished tally of 683, with state deputy premier Andrew Stoner describing it as “a welcome addition to the city’s supply of hotel rooms” as he highlighted high occupancies over the last year.
“More tourism accommodation needs to be built and urgently, particularly in Sydney,” he stressed.
“The expansion of Four Points by Sheraton Sydney is a strong vote of confidence in the NSW visitor economy and the NSW Government’s vision to transform Darling Harbour into one of the world’s best areas to live, meet and be entertained.”
He also welcomed the project’s creation of 2,250 direct and indirect jobs during construction and a further 92 once it becomes operational.
The third tower will also include of 4,810 square metres of events space, expected to ease the concerns of the local business events industry as the closure of Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre looms.
M&L chairman Michael Kum underscored the project as a sign of the firm’s confidence in both the Four Points brand and the Australian market.
“It is a major milestone, not only for M&L and Four Points, but for Sydney itself,” he said.
Meanwhile, architect Philip Cox promised the new structure would complement the existing towers and would also help to mask the Western Distributor, improving the general aesthetic of the area.
