Low cost carrier Scoot has selected Perth as its next Australian port, with services to the Western Australian capital from Singapore to commence on December 19

The launch of the five times weekly service will take the low cost long haul carrier’s tally of Australian ports to three. It already serves Sydney and the Gold Coast.

Chief executive Campbell Wilson highlighted high value airfares, the airline’s safety record and the “empowerment of choice” as significant benefits of the new service.

“Scoot’s inauguration of flights between Perth and Singapore is great news for Western Australians, Singaporeans and all of us at Scoot,” he said.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Andrew McEvoy welcomed the move, predicting the new route’s success would equal that of its east coast services.

"With Singapore and South East Asia now representing one of Australia's strongest tourism growth markets, the decision by Scoot to choose Perth as their third and latest Australian port of call is a huge win for Western Australia, where direct air services are such a key driver of international tourism,” he said.

"Scoot have brought affordable air travel within reach of a whole new audience within South East Asia, and Perth provides the perfect gateway to a spectacular part of our country, where many of them will not have had the opportunity and ease to visit up until now.”

Meanwhile, low cost long-haul rival AirAsia X, which has operated services to Perth since 2008, welcomed the new route, saying increased competition within the will stimulate the overall travel market.

“We believe international travel should be affordable for everyone,” chief executive Azran Osman-Rani said.
