Cairns to woo cruise industry

Cairns to woo cruise industry
By admin

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) is poised to promote Cairns as a home port when the Cruise Down Under conference kicks off tomorrow.

The tourism body and Ports North will showcase Cairns to 150 cruise industry delegates from around the world.

"This opportunity will help position Cairns for home porting which would bring enormous flow-on benefits for our economy with passengers flying in and out, crew stopovers and providoring among the many benefits,” TTNQ CEO Rob Giason said.

World heritage areas, an airport to port distance of 10 minutes and tourism infrastructure are some of the key selling points Cairns will promote.

Delegates will experience some of the 600 tours operating daily to the reef, rainforest, beach and outback.

The conference builds on TTNQ’s cruise strategy, with their sales director attending Cruise Shipping Miami earlier this year.

"As well as marketing our destination, we promoted the expansion of the channel to allow larger cruise ships access to Trinity Inlet,” Giason said.

This led to boutique cruise ship Paul Gauguin using Cairns as a turnaround port for 2014.

“This year four cruise ships arrived in Cairns on their maiden voyage and next year there are 104 cruise ship visits scheduled,” Giason added.
