It mightn't be a dog's life at all for plenty of spoiled pups out there if Skyscanner's recent research is to be believed. The travel focused search engine recently polled 1000 dog owners and found that 37% of females claim they would miss their dog more than their partner if they went away.

And it seems that demented dog owners are going to great lengths to stay in touch with their canine companions when on holiday.

The survey revealed that 40% have called or texted home to check how their pet is going, which isn't too surprising in itself. But a barmy 14% have reportedly spoken with their pets over the telephone and a further 6% have even put pen to paper and sent their clearly illiterate pets a postcard. Then there are the nutty 5% who have Skyped their no doubt bewildered pets and a further 2% who have been in touch via a video link.

Additional findings revealed that 22% of people, somewhat curiously, brought a picture of their pet on holiday, while a damp eyed 3% even cut their holidays short as they could not be without their furry friends any longer.

Finally, a staggering one in five people claim they have never been on holiday without their pet. So, while your correspondent openly scoffed at the recently launched Virgin Australia frequent flyer program for pets, it seems there will be a sizeable minority out there who will be purring with enthusiasm when it comes to signing up.
