Set up home for the week
The home away from home: Meriton Herschel Street, Brisbane
Use the kitchen and head to market:
For Brisbane fresh markets, look no further than Jan Power’s Farmers Market. Held in different locations across the city on certain days, there’s something for both a weekday and a weekend visit.
Stalls are set up on Queen Street, in Mitchelton and at the Brisbane Powerhouse. The market brings the country to Brisbane urbanites and is not restricted to just fruit and vegetables. It also has local ginger beer, popcorn, honey, bagels, hot smoked salmon and fresh pasta.
Use those glasses and BYO:
You are spoilt or choice with boutique bottle shops selling local craft beer and Australian wines. And there’s nowhere better to start than at Archive Beer Boutique on Boundary Street. There is also Craft artisan shop in Red Hill, where they also have tastings of specialty tipples on Thursday and Friday evenings. The Wine Emporium in Fortitude Valley is the place to go if you would like an expert to recommend your vino. With a resident champagne aficionado and a similarly skilled expert on white and red burgundy, you will leave feeling knowledgeable about your plonk.
Scrub up with a local treat:
While the bathroom comes complete with local designer Peter Morrissey products, you could also make your way to the Biome eco store on Adelaide street. Stocking Australian made, organic skincare, opt for the sanctum range that is sourced from nearby Byron Bay. Sanctum was created by a Byron Bay local and is certified organic as well as vegan. Using Byron Bay suppliers, the money is kept in the community and the family run company consults their “trusted mates” for ingredients.
The home away from home: Quest Royal Gardens Fitzroy, Melbourne
Use the kitchen and head to market:
Melbourne has some stellar produce markets, so you can stock the apartment kitchen with locally sourced goodness. Better than that, interacting with stallholders and producers will make you feel like you’re part of the neighbourhood. And there are rich pickings in this town, with several foodie markets to choose from. Once a month on Saturday there is the Gasworks Farmers Market which recently won the Best Market title at the Delicious magazine awards. The stallholders are all Victorian locals and plastic bags are banned in keeping with the sustainable and eco-friendly credentials of the market.
Use those glasses and BYO:
Mountain Goat beer is brewed in the suburb next to where you are staying. In Richmond, two mates decided to brew their own beer and set up a warehouse. Now their microbrewery is open for tours, pizza and boozing on Wednesday and Friday evenings. The award-winning beer is stocked in bottle shops around Melbourne and it comes in four varieties. There’s the English style hightail ale, the India pale ale, the unpredictable rare breed and the certified organic steam ale.
Scrub up with a local treat:
The world-renowned skincare company Aesop originated in Melbourne, so where better to stock up on bathroom fillers for your week away? The products are renowned for a high antioxidant value and use botanic and laboratory ingredients. “We advocate the use of our products as part of a balanced life that includes a healthy diet, sensible exercise, a moderate intake of red wine, and a regular dose of stimulating literature,” said the official Aesop website. It’s hard to argue with an ethos that has seen the company stocked from Paris to Tokyo.
The home away from home: Meriton Bondi Junction, Sydney
Use the kitchen and head to market:
The best fresh food in Sydney can be found at weekend farmer’s markets. On Wednesday and Saturday the Entertainment Quarter of Moore Park is taken over by bartering and hessian bags brimming with fruit and vegetables from the country. You can try before you buy, with an array of samples on offer. There are fresh flowers plus organic and hydroponic goods. There’s cheese and pastries, and if you can’t wait until you get home, hot food stalls serve global food to the crowds.
Use those glasses and BYO:
For a historic shopping experience, head underground to the GPO’s Cheese and Wine Room. Housed in the imposing GPO building, marking the gateway to Martin Place, the sandstone structure has imposingly high ceilings and the cool dark underground is the ideal place to cellar wine. This cellar will recommend cheese to go with your wine, so your pre-dinner snack is taken care of.
Scrub up with a local treat:
Jurlique began in 1985 on a South Australian farm and uses organic and biodynamic local ingredients in their skincare products. With 95% natural ingredients, locally-sourced where possible, head to a store in Sydney to stock up your apartment bathroom with a few luxurious goodies.
There is a flagship store on Pitt Street as well as closer to where you’re staying, with a shop at Bondi Junction Westfield as well as Bondi Beach if you fancy a beach stroll with your shop.
