Consumers to reap alliance rewards: BA

British Airways has claimed that consumers stand to benefit from its recent consolidation of London services with those of long-term partner Qantas.

The British flag carrier last month upgraded its London to Sydney service via Singapore from a Boeing 777 to a larger Boeing 747. It now operates daily flights from Bangkok to London and 17 return flights per week from Hong Kong to London, but has ended its service between Bangkok and Sydney.
Instead, Qantas now flies from Australia to Bangkok and Hong Kong, ceasing onward flights to London from both destinations.
“The airlines have worked together to ensure that customers will be able to connect swiftly and efficiently through Bangkok and Hong Kong,” a BA statement said. It added that the arrangement provided more options to customers flying through Hong Kong, with better connections and service on flights between Australia, the UK and Europe.
“The Joint Service Agreement with Qantas remains a robust partnership that is adapting to the continuing competitive environment,” regional commercial manager South West Pacific Neil Ager said.
“The changes mean that British Airways and Qantas are developing their joint services between Australia and the UK to maximise the airlines’ respective network strengths and to provide customers with greater options throughout Asia and Europe.”
The changes will see Singapore become a premium hub for passengers travelling to and from Australia, with both airlines investing in the premium lounge at Changi airport.
“The new approach is a smarter use of both airline’s resources that will enhance our competitive position in Asia and the Australia-Europe market,” Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said in August, when the changes were first flagged.
