Peru has won the award for Best Culinary Destination in South America at the World Travel Awards (WTA) for the third consecutive year.

In addition, Peru’s vibrant and fascinating region was recognised as Best Cultural Destination and Leading Heritage Destination, while Lima won Leading City Break Destination in South America.

Often referred to as the Oscars of the travel industry, the WTA’s were established in 1993 to recognise and reward excellence in the travel industry worldwide.

The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism and President of the Board of the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for export and tourism Magali Silva Velarde-Alvarez said she was very pleased with Peru’s performance at WTA.

“We believe this is the result of our latest Peru campaign, Hidden Treasures Empire, a major campaign undertaken by the current government to position our country as the birthplace of an important cultural legacy for humanity,” Velarde-Alvarez said.

“Achieving prizes of this magnitude means to encourage investment in tourism. It enables us to further promote quality service as well as encourage sustainable tourism activities.”

Peru also came out in front in a number of other categories, taking home 12 of the 40 awards presented at the 2014 WTA.

Peru’s awards included Leading Business Hotel, Best City Hotel in South America, Best Green Operator in South America and Best Tour Operator.
