What’s your city’s nickname?

Take a look at these super cute illustrations and see whether you agree.

Expedia has released a visual list of some of the most well know nicknames for different cities around the world, with a cute lil’ picture for each one.

Whilst some of them are obvious (everyone knows Wollongong as The Gong) some of the cities have been given pretty funny (and unfortunate) nicknames. The city of eternal fog, anyone?

Some will surprise you, some will shock you, and some will educate you.

Here are the top 11 nicknames for cities around the world, plus their back stories!

Camrose, Canada:

This tranquil city is surrounded by parklands filled with wild roses, known to be a beautiful blooming pink. The Rose City, get it?

Kolhapur, India:

This Indian city is the spiritual centre of Kushti Wrestling, which visitors can watch from the one-hundred-year-old national wrestling stadium or at one of the 40 training institutes – thus The City of Wrestlers.

Yatomi, Japan:

Heres a fun fact: the number of goldfish produced in Yatomi in 1975 was 71.57 million. Does it need another reason to be know as The City of Goldfish? There are even specialised goldfish farms!

Chicago, USA:

This is one of the largest cities in the US, and has been known as The Windy City since the late 1870s. But it might not actually be so windy – The New York Sun said Chicago was windy because its politicians were full of hot air.

Manchester, UK:

Manchester was the home of the cotton industry – and even though the industry itself is gone, the name Cottonopolis lives on.

Wollongong, Australia:

Aussie represent! Wollongong is believed to mean “Seas of the South” in Aboriginal language, but has been shortened (like everything is in Aus) to The Gong.

Florence, Italy:

The emblem of Florence is a red lily on a white field and has several origin stories, hence the nickname The City of Lilies.

Paris, France:

Also often referred to as The City of Love, the nickname for Paris still stands as The City of Light, thought to originate from the 1860s, when the city was lit up by 56,000 gas lamps, in a bid to end nighttime thefts and murders.

Curitiba, Brazil:

This city is known for it’s rainy and foggy climate, which earned it the nickname of The City of Eternal Fog. But don’t let the name put you off – this city has a ton of parks and green space.

Ushuaia, Argentina:

This the southernmost city in the world and is windy cold and desolate – all whilst being stunningly beautiful. It’s also the jumping-off point for Antarctica, so its obvious why it’s nicknamed as The End of the World.

Cape Town, South Africa:

Ever since Cape Town started existing in 1652, it’s been welcoming to sailors seeking rest and refreshment. It’s also been a meeting point and trading hub for centuries – hence the nickname The Tavern of the Seas.
