Nepal flights grounded for 2nd day

All international flights to and from Nepal’s only international airport remain suspended, as a hobbled Turkish Airlines plane awaits removal from the side of the runway.

With the necessary equipment unavailable in Nepal, engineers and equipment from the Indian Air Force are expected to arrive in Kathmandu on Thursday to tow away the Airbus-A330, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said.

The closure of Tribhuvan International Airport on Wednesday led to the suspension of 80 flights, stranding hundreds of passengers.

The same number was expected to be affected on Thursday.

The Turkish Airlines plane with 238 people on board burst at least one tyre after landing early on Wednesday, veering off the runway on to the grass.

All passengers were removed to safety through emergency exits.

The plane, which was flying from Istanbul, was on its second landing attempt after the first failed because of poor visibility.
