Mass stabbing near Tokyo leaves one child dead and 17 people injured

One child is dead and 17 other people injured after a man attacked commuters in a park and at a bus stop near Tokyo, Japan.

The attack happened just before 8am local time in Kawasaki’s residential district, with 16 schoolgirls reportedly among the victims.

Police originally said that a man thought to be in his 30s and a girl were without vital signs, and that three others were seriously injured, before later confirming that one of the schoolgirls had died, according to national broadcaster NHK.

According to Japanese broadcaster NHK, police said one adult and one child are without vital signs.

NHK reported that police have detained a man thought to be in his 50s, who had stabbed himself in the neck and has since been confirmed dead.

Police reportedly found two knives at the scene, which the suspect was seen holding during the attack.
