Trail number hike

The Queenstown Trail, a 100km cycle and hiking track in New Zealand’s South Island, attracted 35,000 users in the first three months after its opening late last year.

Managers of the trail, which cost $6 million to create and required the permission of 25 landowners, had set a target of 25,000 annual visitors.

Kaye Parker, chief executive of the Queenstown Trails Trust, described the trail as “the new way to see the Queenstown area”.

She said it had also delivered a boost for tourism to Arrowtown, the mid-point of the trail.

New islands to hike

Visitors to Auckland will be able to hike for three days on Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands from next summer.

The Rangitoto Motutapu Haerenga – a Journey through Sacred Islands, is being developed by the Department of Conservation, Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development and other stakeholders.

It will operate as an alternative to the existing half day/one day Rangitoto summit walk.

Auckland Mayor Len Brown said: “Walking to the summit or Rangitoto is already one of Auckland’s most popular daytrips for locals and visitor alike, but Rangitoto and Motutapu have so much more to offer and the Haerenga is a chance to discover the contrasting landscapes and histories of the two islands.”

Tourism NZ hobbits ahead

Visits to Tourism New Zealand’s website climbed 19% in the 12 months ending March. The sharp rise was attributed to the release of The Hobbit movie.

Wi-fi for free

Auckland-based Skycity has introduced free wifi in its two hotels, the Skycity Grand Hotel and Skycity Hotel.

Post-earthquake tourism

Central Otago has said a united effort is helping to aid the tourism recovery in New Zealand’s South Island.

Tourism has “inevitably” struggled since the Christchurch earthquake but is on the up, the region’s tourism manager, product development Michelle Ormsby said.

“We are starting to see a positive turnaround. It has inevitably taken time but the South Island is working together which has helped the recovery.”
