Qantas strongly rejects Andrew Wilkie’s claim that Boxing Day sale is a “scam”

The Qantas Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane arrives at Sydney International Airport after flying direct from New York on Sunday, October 20, 2019 in Australia. Qantas will operate the flights later this year, with medical scientists and health experts on board to conduct studies in the cockpit and the cabin to help determine strategies to promote long haul inflight health and wellbeing on ultra-long haul flights. It will be the first commercial airline to ever fly direct from New York to Sydney. It comes as the national carrier continues to work towards the final frontier of global aviation by launching non-stop commercial flights between the US and the UK to the east coast of Australia in an ambitious project dubbed

Qantas says it strongly rejects Andrew Wilkie’s claims made last night on X.com, that the airline’s Boxing Day sale is a scam.

In a statement to Travel Weekly, the airline highlighted how many fares were available at sale prices.

“More than 650,000 seats are available in our Boxing Day sale to more than 60 destinations across our domestic network.

“Boxing Day sale fares are available in both directions of travel on all routes until sold out, allowing customers to secure return sale fares to their chosen destination.

For example, Adelaide to Melbourne $136 one way and Melbourne back to Adelaide $136 one way, for travel from February to April.”

“In some instances, one direction of travel will sell out prior to the return direction of travel and as with all our sales the most popular routes sell out first.”

Last night, independent MP Andrew Wilkie said he would be lodging a complaint with the ACCC “ASAP” regarding Qantas’ Boxing Day sale.

“I’ll be lodging a complaint to the ACCC ASAP about QANTAS offering FF and cheap tickets outbound, but then no FF tickets and only big fares return.

“A scam. No I’m not hoping to holiday anytime soon. Speaking up for people who’ve had a gutfull of greedy airlines #auspol #politas”

In the tweet the MP claims the airline is only offering sale fares on half of a return fare and “big fares” for the return leg of their Boxing Day sale, details of which can be found here.

A check of airfares available via Qantas’ website undertaken by Travel Weekly showed sale fares were available either in both directions to and from a destination, or when a sale fare wasn’t available for a return leg, a standard air fare was available.
