Midweek Interview: Dawid Koegelenberg, General Manager, Paresa Resort Phuket

Midweek Interview: Dawid Koegelenberg, General Manager, Paresa Resort Phuket

The challenge for the industry is… Basically we are all looking to fill our resorts in low season and it’s getting harder and harder by the day. What ever the reasons; being it the economic situation, Donald Trump, Brexit or the thread of terrorism in Europe, there are more and more issues popping up around the world daily and the last thing people are thinking about is a long lazy expensive 5 star holiday. It’s tough!

The things I like about my job… I cant really answer this but what I can say to you is that I have never woken up thinking “I don’t want to go to work” I simply love what I do and I will not swop it for anything else.

And the frustrations are … Its harder now to get the younger staff to do the “dirty” work. They simply just don’t want to do it and are not interested to earn a minimum wage. My first job after completing hotel school was to polish silver cutlery and deliver food to the dining room as a runner. We all started at the bottom.

If I didn’t work in travel I would be… A coffee shop owner.

Favourite airline? Emirates.

My proudest moment was… I was 23 and  won “best future hotelier” from the Hotel School. Most of my class failed and are not in the industry any more.

The naughtiest thing I ever did was… Sorry I cant tell… I’ll be locked up!

I try to relax by… Running on the beach  with my Jack Russel or drink a G&T.

The last time I feared for my life was… When I fell off a zipline 20m into the jungle.

If I can, I always try to avoid… Tequila.

I really wish I had… Learned to speak another language.

The best advice I’ve ever received was… Its never too late.

I don’t understand why people… Go home and leave a bad comment on Trip Advisor but did not have the courage to mention the issue while in house, there are very few things we cannot fix.

My greatest weakness is… I cant stand lazyness, I get angry and GM’s should always control their emotions.

And my greatest strength is… My charm .. I can sell you Ice at the North Pole.

If I won a $1 million lottery (aside from travelling), I would… Buy a house.

If I was prime minister I would… Introduce a pension for GM’s.

If I could be someone else for one day I would be a… Lighthouse keeper on a rock in the middle of the sea.

I’ve always wanted to travel to… South America.

My favourite holiday was… In a tent on the skeleton coast in Namibia.
