Sydney likes to boast about its spectacular harbour but the city may not be bragging about being voted the 11th most expensive destination in the world for a quick getaway.

For a cheap escape, it’s Hanoi in Vietnam that’s claimed the No.1 spot as the best-value destination in the world, according to the latest study by TripAdvisor released on Wednesday.

The TripIndex Cities list compared the cost of a three-night break for two people during June to August in 40 key tourist cities around the world, taking in the cost of a four-star hotel for three nights, a visit to three attractions, lunch each day, a taxi to and from dinner each day, plus the cost of dinner itself.

In Hanoi, that will set you back an average of $923.

Meanwhile, Cancun in Mexico, you’ll pay $2546, which put the city at the No.1 stop in the world’s most expensive destination, followed by Zurich and New York.

In Sydney, which was just outside the Top 10 table after Toronto, Dubai and Singapore, a three-night break in Sydney will cost you about $1873.
